Dandruff is a skin condition that is caused as a result of a dry scalp. Another very common reason for dandruff could be the overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called malassezia. Whatever may be the reason, nobody likes “snow” falling from their head. There are a number of shampoos available in the market today to treat dandruff. However, if you are one of those who have tried and tested all the shampoos, but to no avail, we present you with 5 home remedies to treat dandruff. The ingredients for these are easily available your kitchen and they don’t cost you much either.
Fenugreek Seeds Or Methi
This ingredient is almost always present in an Indian kitchen. Fenugreek seeds are rich in amino acids and proteins, which help get rid of dandruff flakes and also help make your hair stronger, softer, and smoother.
Soak about 2 tablespoons fenugreek seeds in 2 cups of water and leave it overnight.
Grind it into a paste the following morning and apply this paste on your scalp.
Leave it on for about 35-45 minutes and wash it with a mild shampoo.
Alternatively, you can also add some yoghurt to the paste before application on the scalp. Yoghurt acts as a natural conditioner for your hair.
You might have to repeat this method once in one week or two, depending on the severity of your dandruff.
Baking soda is not only an all rounder in your cooking needs but is also an important ingredient in a number of home remedies. In this case baking soda works in three ways – firstly, it mildly exfoliates and gets rid of dead skin cells from your scalp; secondly, its kills the fungus present on our scalp and thirdly, it loosens and removes dead skin flakes from your head.
Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 1 cup of water and mix it well. Use this mixture in place of shampoo daily.
If you feel you can’t do without shampoo, then you can try mixing 1 teaspoon of baking soda to your required amount of shampoo.
Try using the shampooless baking soda method though, it will prove to be more effective.

The acidic content of fresh lemon juice helps break down the fungus-causing cells that are often the cause of your dandruff. Its plus point is that it is easily available, and is free from harsh chemicals that might harm your scalp or hair.
Pour 2 tablespoons of lemon juice onto your scalp and massage it gently. Try to reach all parts of your scalp. Do this for a minute.
Follow this by rinsing your hair with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice mixed in a cup-and-a-half of warm water.
Repeat this method daily for best results.
Vinegar works by getting rid of unwanted skin cells that cause dandruff. It also acts as a fungicide that will help you wash away the naturally occurring fungus and it won’t even clog your pores letting your scalp breathe. Apple cider vinegar and/or white vinegar work the best.
Mix half a cup of vinegar in half a cup of warm water. (You may need more depending on your hair length and growth, just remember to keep the ratio 1:1)
Pour the mix on your scalp and hair. Massage rigorously for 5-7 minutes and then wash it off with water alone.
Don’t shampoo your hair for about 9-12 hours after using this method. Your best bet is to this at night, so that you can shampoo the morning after.

Regular table salt works best for this cause. The slight abrasive nature of regular salt acts as a natural scrub to your scalp. It erodes off all the flakes and dead skin cells from your scalp, leaving your hair dandruff-free.
Shake some salt onto your damp scalp with a salt shaker or sprinkle it on with your hands.
Massage the salt on the scalp for 3-5 minutes. Rinse off with your shampoo.
Repeat this method once or twice a week till you notice results.
Try these home remedies to treat dandruff yourself to see it work. If your dandruff still persists or seems to be getting worse, consult a dermatologist immediately, for you might not have a common dandruff after all.
