Summer is making its presence felt way too fiercely for us. Which means, now is the time to enjoy simple, spring cocktails. But if you are a teetotaler, there’s no reason to worry! You can still enjoy the sweet pleasures of a delicious drink sans the alcohol! These type of summer drinks, popularly known as mocktails are incredibly tasty and cooling. So I say, you must go beyond the gin and tonic (or the nimbu-paani) and get mixing up these oh-so-refreshing mocktails right away!
Mock Shirley Temple: Celebrate the freshness of oranges and lemons with this great alternative to a non-virgin Shirley Temple
½ cup orange juice
½ cup lime or lemon flavoured aerated drink
1 tbsp grenadine syrup (alternative thick pomegranate syrup)
1 red cherry for garnish
Method: In a tall glass combine the orange juice with the lemon flavoured drink and set aside in the fridge. Pour the grenadine syrup in a big Martini glass and let it coat two-thirds of the glass from the bottom-up. Pour the orange-lemon drink in and garnish with a cherry. Nobody will ever guess there’s no alcohol in your drink!
Virgin Cucumber Mojito: This is the most refreshing drink for summer that is also effective in cooling you down. Give it a try!
2-3 large round slices of cucumber (unpeeled)
2 cups chilled soda (or mojito flavoured aerated drink, eg, 7up or Sprite)
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tsp fine sugar
A pinch of salt
A handful of mint leaves for garnish
Method: In a mocktail shaker or a large bowl, combine the lemon juice, sugar and salt until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the soda and give it a good shake. Pour in a glass and add the cucumber slices. Garnish with mint leaves and serve chilled.

Mango Freeze: There can be no better way to enjoy mangoes this summer!
1 large alphonso mango (peeled, and pureed)
½ cup orange juice
¼ cup sweet lime juice
1 tbsp lemon juice
4-5 ice cubes
1 cup chilled soda
Method: Plop all the ingredients in a blender and mix until frothy. Pour in small to medium glasses and garnish with a slice of lemon.
Virgin Pina Colada: If you like to stick to classics, then you’d thoroughly enjoy this drink.
1 cup ice cubes
1 and ¼ cups pineapple juice
¼ cup milk
¼ cup heavy cream
2 tbsp white sugar
Method: Blend all the ingredients together in the blender until smooth. Garnish with a round slice of pineapple, sit back and enjoy your drink!
Iced Ginger Green Tea: This is literally the elixir of summer. Just one sip, it’s secret ingredient will cool you down COMPLETELY!
2 bags of good quality green tea
1 tbsp thick ginger syrup
1 tbsp fresh grated ginger
1 tbsp crushed mint leaves
1 lemon (zested and juiced)
Sugar as per taste
1 glass of ice cubes
1 tbsp pomegranate pomade/syrup (surprise!)
Method: Brew your green tea in one cup of steaming (not boiling) water and set aside to cool. Once it is cool enough, remove the tea bags and put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes to chill. In a blender add the ginger juice, shreds, lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar and mint, along with the ice cubes and green tea and blend well. Pour the pomegranate pomade in a glass and top it off with the ginger green tea. And you’re done!
