Many people take protein powders as supplements in an effort to gain muscle. However, there is evidence that an excessive amount of protein may actually be bad for you. So if you having your eggs, chicken and pulses, and still feel the need/are already indulging in intake of protein supplements, understand that it can have some side-effects. Here we list a few of these nasty side effects.

Protein can lead to excessive calorie intake which leads to excessive fat.
Adding extra protein to your diet obviously also adds extra calories. As excess protein cannot be stored in its original form in the body, if you are not burning these calories by doing a sufficient amount of physical activity, or doing enough weight bearing activities to build more muscle, these extra calories are likely to be converted to fat. An increase in protein intake without an increase in physical activity levels is likely to result in an equal gain in both fat and muscle, which may not be exactly what you are looking for when you supplement protein powder.

Loss of calcium
When you consume higher levels of protein, your body generates a higher amount of acids due to the excess sulphates and phosphates. The kidneys then try to restore the balance of acid by excreting more acid, at the same time the skeleton releases calcium which is also lost in the urine. This results in loss of calcium from the bones.
Protein supplements can lead to kidney damage.
High amount of protein intake can put undue stress on your kidneys due to the excess production of ketone, which is generated for excretion in such a diet. This damages your kidneys as it is overworked throughout the day in order to eliminate ketone.

A high protein intake, coupled with a lower carbohydrate intake, can push the body into a state called ketosis, which, as mentioned before, involves excess production of ketone. This build-up of ketone is toxic for your body and causes your kidneys to go into overdrive to eliminate this substance, and in the process a lot of water is lost in urine. This increases the risk of dehydration, particularly if you are also losing a lot of fluid through sweat during exercise.

So if you are indeed indulging in the habit of taking protein supplements, make sure you do so measurably and thoughtfully.
