Is your hair laced with lice? These creepy, crawly, parasitic insects are a common problem among children and teens. However, adults can also be affected with head lice at times. In order to find a solution for them, it is important to know how lice spread. If one happens to come in contact with hair, hairbrushes, clothing, or bedding that has been contaminated with lice eggs there is a huge possibility of ‘carrying’ the pest with you and further contaminating others. Thus the root cause are the tiny little lice eggs that can be passed by personal or close contact. Worry not, because there are completely safe ways to get rid of head lice eggs with natural remedies.
Here are a few ways you can kill head lice eggs at home.

The most sought and easiest remedy is to use greasy anti-bacterial oil. Indian grandmothers swear by this method which does work but only requires some time and effort. Oil your hair well using some good quality anti-bacterial oil like almond oil or coconut oil, and use a very fine-toothed comb to comb through your hair in small sections. Take one small section at a time and comb through from the roots to the tips. The head lice eggs will get trapped in the teeth of your comb and fall out. Once you’ve combed through the entire scalp wash your hair with a herbal shampoo for faster relief.
Ensure that no one else uses your combs, hair brushes, towels, hair bands and clips as these may be contaminated. Ensure to wash them regularly (even daily if need be) with hot water and a mild shampoo. This method is extremely effective if done regularly every morning and evening for a week or two.

Another effective natural remedy for head lice eggs is using essential oils. Add 15-20 drops of either tea tree oil or lavender oil in half a cup of olive oil or rubbing alcohol and mix it well. Apply this mixture to your scalp using fingertips or a cotton ball. Leave it overnight then comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb and wash it off the next morning. Be sure to do a patch test before using any essential oil on your scalp. Remember that you need to continue any lice treatment until you see no lice or lice eggs in your hair or on any of your belongings that come in close contact with your head.
Some kitchen ingredients can also get rid of head lice eggs. Garlic can suffocate the lice or their eggs killing them and preventing further contamination. Grind a handful of garlic cloves (10-12 should be fine) to a paste and add 3 large tablespoons lemon juice to it. Apply this mixture to your scalp and wash it off after 30 minutes with lukewarm water.
You can also make a herbal shampoo to get rid of lice using garlic juice, lemon juice, strongly brewed green tea, and cooking oil mixed with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Mix it up in a bowl and store it in an air-tight bottle. You can wash your hair with a mild shampoo after using this if you don’t want the ‘garlic-y’ smell in your hair.
These natural remedies are very effective in getting rid of and also preventing head lice and lice eggs. What’s more, they have no side effects! This means you have nothing to lose, except the lice, of course!
