How to practise safe sex


Being sexually active is a very common thing these days. But what the youth do not understand is the importance of practicing safe sex. It not only helps in avoiding pregnancy, but also ensures safety from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). If you are someone who is sexually active, you need to read the following tips on safe sex to stay healthy.

Always use a condom


Using a condom is an absolute necessity. It is a common myth that STDs only get transmitted during intercourse. A condom should be worn during vaginal, anal as well as oral sex. When worn during intercourse, it also helps in avoiding pregnancies. Do not use an already used condom. Do not use two condoms, as two lubricated condoms can cause them to slip, thus losing the purpose.

Be aware

Even if the person that you are sleeping with is a virgin, don’t think that it is safe not to use a condom. There are certain STDs that can be transmitted through skin contact. So, if he touches your vagina with his naked penis, you might contract HPV, if he has it. HPV is responsible for genital warts and cervical cancer.

Stay clean

Cleanliness is very important. If any liquid like semen, vaginal fluid or blood comes in contact with the mouth, vagina, penis or anus, wash it immediately. If there is any cut in the skin of any of these, wash thoroughly to avoid infections.

Pee after sex

To avoid any chances of getting UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), it is best to pee after sex as this ensures that any bacteria that might have accumulated in the urethra is washed off.

Limit your partners

Limit the number of your sexual partners and avoid sleeping with sex workers. This is a good way of staying safe and healthy. But this certainly is not the only cause of STDs.

Clean your toys

Make sure you clean sex toys before as well as after use. If you do not clean them, you might get an infection, especially if you are sharing them. Use an antiseptic cleaner to ensure that they are 100% clean.

Get tested


Regular tests for HIV and other STDs are very essential. This is the only way to know that you are healthy, because most of them do not show any symptoms for quite a long time.
