June – A Month Of Childhood Nostalgia!

Now that it’s June, and the rains have made a short guest appearance over the past few days, the lives of most office goers have… not really changed. The monotony of work life goes on, with absolutely nothing to look forward to. But do you remember the time when June was much more than just another month for us; it was the means to a new beginning, it was the start of a new academic year! But hey, none of it really mattered to us when we were kids. With a new year at school came a whole new bunch of experiences and adventures to look forward to.

Rains in India

We’re sure you definitely looked forward to these 7 things in June when you were a kid… And thanks to them, June always will be a month of childhood nostalgia!

The excitement of buying new bags, tiffin boxes and water bottles

The fact that it was a new academic year in school was reason enough to pester our parents into buying us the latest and trendiest bags, lunch boxes and water bottles. Remember competing with our classmates as to who had the coolest G.I. Joe, Pokémon or Barbie bag packs?

School friends

That amazing feeling you get when you meet your school buddies after the longest two months!

Ahh… That amazing feeling you get when you meet your school buddies after the longest two months! It’s great to finally catch up with them, and you can’t wait to share stories about your vacations, catch up on lost time and show off your new haircuts, bags and tiffin boxes… and of course, share your tiffin while you’re at it.

The raincoat shopping trip

The cool thing about schools opening in June is that the monsoons are just around the corner. And I use the word “cool” here because not only do the rains bring a pleasant coolness to the otherwise sweltering summers, they also bring in the latest in raincoat fashion! Didn’t you love unfurling your new raincoat during the first rains? And with all those bright pastel, neon and camouflage prints to choose from, the thrill while shopping for raincoats drove us kids ecstatic!

The rains, glorious rains…

Walking in the rain

Do you remember the smell of wet mud during the first few showers?

While we’re on the topic of monsoons, it’s only fair to note that the best part about June is the rains themselves! Do you remember the smell of wet mud during the first few showers? Now that you’re sitting in your congested office building, you probably do not. But when we were back in school, and running around on the ground during recess, that smell of wet mud was so fresh and made us feel so alive.

Getting a whole new load of books

There’s something so unique about the smell of new books, it reminds you that the previous year is over and now you have a fresh start. Yes, you will be frantically turning their pages and weeping during the exams, but for the moment, those new books gave you a slight high.

Don’t forget to cover those new books

Covering books

Crisp brown sheets – twisted, folded and wrapped neatly around your books…

Now that we have our new books, we need to cover them with those unforgettable brown sheets. Crisp brown sheets – twisted, folded and wrapped neatly around your books… it was like a whole month’s worth of craft classes condensed into one day! Let’s not forget to add those super cool Superman labels and Bugs Bunny stickers for that extra touch!

Seeing your ‘special someone’ after such a long time

You had restless nights all through summer, lost in thoughts about your one love’s pretty face. And now that your love is finally here in front of you, you realise that he/she looks cuter than ever and you’re love-struck all over again. Aww… puppy love!

Now that we took this short trip down memory lane, you probably feel sad that you can no longer live those childhood days.
