Round them off:
When filing your nails, try and file them in round shape rather than the box style. The round edges are less likely to get caught up in stuff and hence, less likely to chip off. Also, the rounded effect complements the natural shape of your fingers giving your hands an overall prettier look.
Protect them with gloves:
Make it a habit to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or clothes. The chemicals in the cleaning agents aren't just harsh on your hand but they can rob your nails of its nutrients as well, making them weak and dull. Also, prolonged contact with water isn't beneficial for your nails.
Include protein in your diet:
It has been long believed that what you eat directly affects your body's functions. The protein found in foods such as eggs, fish, meat and veggies like spinach, peas and corn promotes the growth of keratin, a substance that lends to healthy nail growth. So, make it a point to include some amount of protein in your diet without fail. What's more, protein will also help those luscious locks of hair look even better.
Always use a base coat:
When painting your nails, make it an absolute must to apply a layer of base coat before your favourite colour of nail paint. The base coat acts as a protective shield for your nails against the chemicals in the nail paint. In the absence of a base coat, the nail paint can strip your nails of its moisture making them dry and brittle.
Don't bite your nails:
Lastly, your nails will remain strong and healthy if you let them be. Biting them just isn't going to help! Biting your nails makes your nails real short and your fingers look stubby. So, stop this dirty habit right now. When you feel the urge to bite nails, try chewing gum instead. Another way is to rub them with a bit of lime juice; its sour taste on nails, when you go to bite them, will act as a reminder that you mustn't.
If you heed our advice, you will most certainly have your nails growing strong and healthy. But, as you grow your nails they might turn yellow. Also, sometimes nail paints can leave a coloured residue even after using a nail paint remover, thus, making your nails look unflattering. If that happens, try out these simple remedies to get rid of the stains and make your nails white and shiny.
Soak them in lemon juice:
Lemon juice acts as a good agent in cleaning off the stains from your nails. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice in a bowl and soak your stained nails in them for about 12-15 minutes. Then, use a soft bristled toothbrush and rub on the discolouration. Finally wash it off with lukewarm water and moisturize. Practising this routine twice on a daily basis will get rid of any stains in a few days.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda paste:
Mix baking soda and 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (you can find this at your local chemist or, you can also opt for lemon juice) turning it into a paste-like texture. Apply this mixture on your nails, scrub lightly with a toothbrush and leave it on for about 3-5 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. Follow this method at an interval of two weeks, for best results.
Whitening toothpaste does the trick:
Whitening toothpastes might or might not whiten your teeth, but they definitely whiten your nails. Preferably opt for the white coloured whitening toothpaste as opposed to the gel versions. Apply a bit of toothpaste on your nails, and using a toothbrush, scrub for about 2 minutes. You might have to do this a couple of times depending on how tough the discoloration or stain is.
