Instructions: Start by making the pink sponge first. Blend the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Sift the flour and the baking powder together, and set aside (this is your dry mix).  Then beat the eggs with vanilla essence and the food coloring, until light and frothy (this is your wet mix).

Now it’s time to mix the dry and wet mix with the butter and sugar. Start with one tablespoon of dry mix and blend then add one tablespoon of the wet mix and blend again. Continue until all the dry and wet mixture has been well blended in the batter.

Transfer the batter to a well greased loaf tin and bake for 40 minutes in a pre heated oven at 150 degrees C or until well risen and a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool the prepared pink loaf completely before cutting. Cut one inch slices and using a heart-shaped cutter stamp out one heart from each slice. Set the hearts aside and save the cake crumbs for later use.

Make sure to keep them tightly close together leave a 2 cm gap at either end. Then carefully spoon over the remaining chocolate cake batter over the row of hearts and cover them completely. Your cake is ready! But wait, you have to decorate it, and for that you need to make the butter cream icing.

Start by melting the chocolate on a double boiler (vessel inside a pot of boiling water) then remove from the heat and leave to cool for a minute. Cream the icing sugar with the butter and add the chocolate, the milk and vanilla, and you’re done. Cool your cake completely before using the icing over it. You can use the pink cake crumbs to decorate your loaf.

Ask your guy or girl to cut the loaf, and… ta-da! Surprise!
