Yes, we know the summer is already upon us and if you have an oily scalp, chances are you are washing your hair every day. But is it okay to wash your tresses daily? Unfortunately the answer is no. Washing your hair daily will only cause it more harm than you can imagine. What with the presence of harmful chemicals in all the shampoos and hair care products; it’s only a slow poison for your dear mane.
Presence of SLS (Sodium lauryl sulfate) in hair-care products:
Many people are clueless about what really SLS is. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS is a chemical lathering agent which has come under the scrutiny for its potential toxicity issues. SLS was initially sold as an industrial strength detergent primarily used for heavy duty cleaners, which means it’s harsh. But sorrowfully enough, it is now found in most products that come in frequent contact with our skin and hair. Talk about ‘hair-care’, huh. This damaging ingredient was added to our shampoos and soaps because consumers came to expect abundant lather in products that are supposed to cleanse in any way. So if you find yourself complaining about an oily scalp and washing your hair every day, stop for a moment and think. You may be potentially jeopardising your hair’s health!
Over-washing your only hair makes them drier:
One of the biggest reasons why you shouldn’t wash your hair every day is because you will lose out on the natural oils or sebum in your hair and scalp. While many people try hard to get rid of sebum complaining about greasy hair, the truth is, these very oils are wonderful for your hair. Your natural hair oils will make your hair healthier and shinier than most products. If you want to avoid oily hair that looks limp, try a dry or powdered shampoo. Or better yet, wash your hair with cold water only.
Styling unwashed hair is easier:
Believe it or not, hair tends to style better the day you don’t wash it. Curls stay in place, it’s easier to brush your hair back into a ponytail or bun, and fly-away hair are more easily tamed. Frequent shampooing will pull down the moisture level in your tresses and the bounce will vanish. Save yourself the damage (and the trip to a salon) and try using organic or home-made hair-rinses like a tea-rinse or a honey and lemon rinse. This will keep the moisture locked in your hair and make them healthier and shinier.
If you have recently coloured your hair then you may want to keep this in mind – too much washing will fade your hair colour off soon. Shampoos can strip the colour from your hair, so the less often you wash them, the better your colour will look.
Healthy looking hair:
Seventy percent people would agree that, not only will your hair style better but it will also look better on the 2nd day after you wash them. Everything seems to stay in place on Day 2. There is lesser frizz and you don’t need to brush your hair often. However, if you wish for strong and healthy-looking hair, the trick is to eat healthy and use SLS-free shampoos.
It is important to understand that our hair changes throughout our lives depending on the environment, hormones, and stress level. And although not every single one of these reasons will hold true for every person out there, it is all about remaining healthy while experimenting with what works best for you!
