What Causes Prickly Heat?
Prickly heat rashes typically develop after a person sweats far more than usual, due to which the sweat glands get blocked. The result is an itchy rash of small raised red spots with a prickling or stinging sensation. If someone lives in a hot and humid environment, the perspiration makes it easier for dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin to block the sweat glands, forming a barrier and trapping sweat beneath the skin, where it builds up. Owing to this build-up, the bumps form on the skin.
How Can You Prevent It?
If you read through the causes of prickly heat, you'll realize that the prevention is pretty simple – avoid situations and activities that can lead to excessive sweating. These would include excessively hot and humid environments, and strenuous physical activities. Try to keep your skin as cool as possible by taking cool showers, using fans, and even air conditioning, if available. Also, opt for light, loose-fitting clothes, ideally made from cotton.
How Can You Treat It?
In usual cases, prickly heat rashes clear up in a few days, if the affected area is kept cool, clean and dry. To help in speeding up the process, use various modes like cool showers, fans, air conditioners, etc. to keep yourself cool. Once the skin is dry, don't use any kind of oil-based products on it. Do NOT scratch the rash, unless you want more trouble. Use something like calamine lotion to kick the itch. And of course, the main thing – if the rash doesn't go away, run to the doctor, unless you want that infection to turn your life into complete hell!
