Bad Sleeping Positions That Can Harm You!
Sleep – our haven of complete rest, refreshment and the ultimate break from real life. Whether it is a nap or a full-fledged sleep session, we love that deep slumber, don't we? But there are many things that can ruin our doze sessions. I'm going to tackle the most basic one – our sleep positions. While we all have that one position we love to sleep in, they can have harmful effects on us. Most positions have their share of advantages and disadvantages, so I'm going to clear the air about the most common positions people sleep in. Here are a few bad sleeping positions you should avoid if you want complete rest!
Sleeping On The Stomach
This position is one that should be high up on the ‘NO' list. Sleeping on the stomach can put the nose and neck under stress, thereby creating problems for our breathing pattern. The position may also cause something called ‘pins and needles' syndrome in the arms and legs due to the pressure applied on the muscles and joints. In case one finds this position comfortable, they can place a pillow under their hips to avoid stress.
The Foetal Position
This position gets its name from the position of babies during their foetal stages in the womb. This position can be very harmful to us, since it can put a lot of pressure on the back and neck due to the constriction. This, in turn, hampers the breathing process which results in improper sleep.
This position can be beneficial if a person has sleep apnoea or a problem of constant snoring. However, this position has its shortcomings too. Sleeping on the side can cause facial wrinkles, and also numbness in the arm due to the one-sided pressure. Sleeping on the right side can aggravate heartburn, while sleeping on the left side can put pressure on internal organs like the liver, lungs and stomach.
Sleeping On The Back With Arms On The Side
This is often considered as the best sleeping position out of all. However, sleeping on the back with arms on the side can drastically aggravate the problems for people who have issues like sleep apnoea or snoring problems. Others, however, can go ahead and follow this sleep pattern every night.
Sleeping Covering Your Face
Though this is not technically a sleeping position, it is important to ensure that your face is not covered with a blanket or a cloth while you sleep. While most of us do it to avoid light or the cold, it is not advisable, as covering the face may result in choking while we sleep. Also, since your nose would be covered, there will be no contact with fresh air, thereby reducing the quality of sleep.
