Here's How You Can Help Your Friend Quit Smoking
On World's No Tobacco Day, take a pledge, if you smoke or someone you love smokes to make them quit the horrid habit as soon as possible. It's time we act on it and make them stop. It won't be easy, possibly more challenging than ever, but if done right it can give a new life to a smoker that was smoking his life away. Smoking is a serious and complicated addiction. That makes quitting smoking one of the biggest challenges many smokers will ever face. We've prepared a list, that can help you in helping your loved one quit smoking. Read on….
SMOKING KILLS!
1) Write down
Make your loved one take a page and divide it by drawing a line right in between. The left column is a list of things you like about smoking and right side column is what harm you gain by smoking cigarettes. This way you can make them realize how bad smoking is affecting their health or their relationships around.
2) Your future children will smoke too
You can't expect your children to not pick up the habit of smoking if you keep smoking around. Children of smokers are more likely to smoke! Even those who dabbled in a high school nicotine habit had children who were at least 3.2 times more likely to smoke than those whose parents never picked up cigarettes.
3) Put up notes as reminders
Take the list from your loved one, write all the reasons for them to quit smoking on little notes that go up on fridge doors or on the desk, or on the study. Reading these notes every day will remind them of their effort and why they quit smoking. It will motivate them very much resulting in them not giving into the habit of smoking.
4) Get a jar
Make a decorative jar and write on it, ‘Cigarette Money'. The money your loved one spends usually in a day on cigarettes has to go in that jar. That way it also shows them how much money they were wasting it on smoking and how that saved money can be put to better use.
5) Always keep a snack around
Whenever you see your loved one crave for a cigarette, or they seem uneasy, give them healthy snacks to munch on and to occupy their minds. Nuts, sunflower seeds, sugar-free lollipops, gum that helps to quit, etc. They need to keep themselves occupied otherwise they will start thinking about smoking and may end up lighting one.
6) Make them tell their friends and co-workers
Letting people know you that you or your loved one is trying to quit the habit, makes it even easier. They can keep an eye on the person trying to quit as whenever they lose motivation and grab a cigarette, they can stop them. Also, they can keep cigarettes away from that person and create a healthy environment that doesn't remind them of smoking.
7) Make them motivate someone else to quit as well
When they initiate some other smoker to quit as well, they remind themselves too of why they quit and the beliefs keep getting stronger. It creates a chain and it keeps getting longer. When they see how making someone stop smoking actually benefits the health, they themselves will never think of smoking ever again.
