We can give you more than 13 Reasons Why to watch this mystery web drama. Starring Katherine Langford as Hannah Baker, Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen and many other teenagers, 13 Reasons Why has etched a special place in the audience's heart. And, why not?
The second franchise of the much-talked show aired on Netflix on 18th of May, and we all went ahead with the madness to binge watch it at the weekend. Completing the entire series over the weekend was not unpredictable, but what made us curious, and think deeply about certain topics was really different this time. After going through various feeds about different perspectives on the show, TBD decided to highlight those topics which we as humans never even think about discussing it at home, with friends, or even at the offices and colleges.
WHY???
The first season of the series highlighted suicide, a grave mental issue faced by so many people, and it really shocked us inside out. The second season walked in like a storm and left us all thrilled with its different concepts. It's time to talk it out loud with your near and dear ones, no more making them feel lonely about anything, ANYMORE!
So far, this is the only series that talks about teenage issues, and what a teen-mind goes through during their adolescence as well as the mental transformation of a child to an adult.
Haven't you ever gone through any weird issues in your teen years? It's okay! We all go through it, and that plays an important role to shape our future and most importantly, us!
1) Bullying
Bullies might find this funny, but not the survivors. Do you even know the statistics of people getting bullied everywhere? School, colleges, hostel, high-school, offices? Let's get this straight, IT IS NOT FUNNY! Nobody knows what a survivor goes through it when he/she gets bullied by a bunch of stupid people, who think it is cool enough to let people down in front of others. IT IS NOT COOL! And what happened with Tyler in episode 12, makes me feel more disgusted about the bullies. Beware! If you don't feel comfortable with the situation you are stuck in, talk it out to someone. Anyone!
2) Suicide
Do you know any people who ever had suicidal thoughts, discussed anything about ending their lives forever? Or even had second thoughts about living the life. Take them under your wing. Make them feel comfortable, if needed, consult a doctor. But do not let this topic get avoided in the noise of your own thoughts. In the series, Hannah's friends couldn't save her, but season 2 comes in like a bright sunshine, where everyone is helping each other to cope up with the past, and darker chapters of their life.
3) Mental Health
A lot of teens have anger issues, either they need some anger management lectures, or just some me-time to let the feeling sync into their mind. This doesn't make them less stronger, expressing what you feel is right, but don't let this expression hurt yourself or your loved ones. Remember, talking about it helps. Tony going through the same phase opts in for boxing lessons, letting his negative energy turn positive, harming no one near him.
4) Slut Shaming
Okay, now let's get this one thing straight, who gave anyone the right to label someone? We have no authority to call someone names which might hurt their feelings. A lot of people know what they are doing, just because you are not liking the habits, doesn't make that person bad or a slut. Having multiple partners is fine, having multiple friends is fine too, what is not fine is you calling names to the girl or a boy, just because they don't fit into your standard of being NICE. Jess starring at her closet and being all cool to fit into the mental image of the people looking at her, tore me apart! Stop judging someone by their appearance, the way they dress, the way they walk, and of course, the way they choose friends.
5) Body Shaming
Everyone can't be size zero. What all matters is to be fit, only if the person feels to do so. Your body is your temple, don't let anyone let you down by your body. Embrace it! Love it! Curves are cool, so are skinny bodies. Hannah not being comfortable in her own skin just because she was chubby, left me with a heavy heart. Why fit into the image someone shows us? Be it media, friends, or family, don't let anyone body shame you at any cost! You are beautiful... <3
6) LGBT
Every human has an equal right to love whoever they feel like, and homosexuals are no different. People will come, people will say, all we can do is don't react to the person who doesn't understand love. Tony getting annoyed to people naming him "faggot," leaves him in a huge mess. Being gay is as normal as being a het.
7) Gender Biases
Be it any corner of the world, this ugly truth has always been the part of our society. Jess feeling the same during her trial, making her think twice about the way she looks, the way she dresses, and of course, the way she thinks, everything puts a label on a girl. Boys get to define themselves, they get away with a lot of things, within a fraction of seconds, and this society has proved it time and again.
8) Teenage Pregnancy
This is as common as losing virginity before turning 18. Do not panic! Chloe getting pregnant makes her do things for Bryce which she never wanted to do it for him. But does that make her a negative character, maybe she is just saving her child? Well, only time can tell. But to avoid such situations, why not discuss this with your parents first?
9) Sex Education
Sexting, sending nudes, non-consensual sex, and so many things to talk about! All these activities have some consequences and people should be aware of it. Sexting and sending nudes is cool enough to brag in front of the group, but if it gets viral, the weird stares and what-happens-next will leave you shattered. If you indulge yourself into such things, be prepared for the tag and consequences that will come along. Hannah, Courtney, Jess, Chloe, and so many characters face the same. Get proper sex education, including the pros and cons of digital media.
10) Broken Families
Urban lives are well-versed with broken families, and yes, it does affect children in some way or the other. Mr. Baker has an adulterated relationship that hurts Hannah so much, that she somewhere starts blaming herself. No child is responsible for the broken relationships in the family, nor any teenager can help them. All we can do is be nice to them, but its parents job to clear the air between the two, and maintain a healthy family.
11) Drug Abuse
We all know what Justin Foley goes through and how he uses heroin to get out of any situation. This escapism is not at all good! Getting under the wraps of drugs will not only worsen the situation but also affect your health, you can also DIE. So why to catch the route which is never going to do any good to yourself?
12) Groupism
Every college, office or even classes, people form groups. Like minded people start meeting on daily basis, unknowingly forming different groups. But which group do you belong to? To the bullies, or to the survivors?
13) Stalking
This is something we all love it. If we don't stalk a human in person, we do keep a tab on their activities by checking their social media handles. Stalking is stalking, be it in person, or on a digital platform. Clicking pictures without anyone's permission is bad as well. Tyler pays hard for it, but what happens to him is not justified either. Tyler is wrong and so is Monty!
Are you helping? Are you talking? If not, It's time to discuss these points with whoever you feel comfortable with. Be healthy, physically, as well as mentally. We are listening.
