In this exclusive interview with The Brunette Diaries, he talks about what it takes to be a pro Golfer at such a young age and more. Excerpts:
Can you tell us a bit about your journey so far?
My journey so far has been adventurous, exciting and pleasant. Every day is a new challenge. Golf is often called a game of life. It is interesting to see how a round of Golf can actually teach you so much about life.
Did your parents support you right from the start?
My parents have always supported me. They believe in me. They have always encouraged me to live my dreams.
I believe you didn't complete your school because of Golf. Do you regret it?
I am of course schooling. I am currently doing my High School from an online school in the United States which is an accredited school. This gives me the flexibility to travel worldwide, play tournaments, train and still excel in studies. I do not regret doing online schooling as I believe you have to go all out to pursue your dreams. Golf is a very demanding game and you have to give it all.
Do you feel you are missing out on your growing up years because of Golf?
My parents ensure I don't miss out on anything. I live quite a balanced life where I have my share of fun and family. I of course miss my friends and family back home but with frequent trips to India I always make sure I catch up with them. In fact, we make it a point to celebrate most of the festivals back home.
Who are your inspirations?
My inspiration is my love for my nation. I want to play for my country and represent India in the world map where Golf is concerned.
Are you getting enough support from the authorities for your career?
Golf being an individual sport, there is really not much support. You have to independently manage all your expenses and tournaments.
Golf is a very expensive sport. How do you and your family manage?
I am very fortunate my family is able to bear all these expenses. Of course a sponsorship is most welcome which I could certainly use to take my game to another level.
Do you feel Golf is not popular in India?
Golf is really trending and getting popular in India. The awareness of Golf now is far more today than it was a few years back. With time and more dynamic players representing India, I am sure Golf will be the next most popular sport.
What's your daily schedule like?
My daily schedule includes six to seven hours of Golf, an hour of fitness and there to four hours of studies and adequate rest.
How important is fitness in Golf? Do you follow a strict diet?
Unlike earlier times, fitness in Golf today is of utmost importance. It significantly can help improve a players golfing performance. Proper nutrition is of equal importance. I wouldn't say I follow a strict diet as of now but yes there are certain dos and don'ts. Proper nutrition and physical training can certainly help you achieve the desired results.
Do you play any other sport?
Soccer is my stress buster. Given a chance I can play that every day after Golf. I love swimming too.
What's the plan now?
The plan for this year is firstly to work on my swing closely with my coach Justin Parsons. I would love to play and win as many tournaments as I can. I intend to play in the U.A.E. till April. In summers, I will play in the U.S. The year would probably end with lots of tournaments in Asia and India and training in Dubai simultaneously.
