Tips For Long Distance Travel With Your Pet
If you have a pet, you would agree with me when I say that your pet is not just anyone, it is your family. Every day you wake up and the first thing you want to see is that sweet innocent face looking at you. But now, you are planning a holiday and don't want to leave your furry baby back home; you want to take it with you, but are unsure how you'll manage it. If this is the dilemma you are facing right now, let me tell you 3 easy ways how you can travel with your pet and enjoy your trip.
Train is a good option to travel with your pet; it's also a cheaper option. Travelling by train obviously comes with its own challenges. You can take your pet by train but only by the two or three tier first class compartment. The dog can be booked and carried in the luggage/Brake Van paying the charges depending upon the type of train. Specially designed dog boxes are available in the Brake Van for this purpose. Ensure you check these compartments thoroughly as they sometimes carry rat-kill poison. Don't forget to carry your pet's bed, toys and lots of water for the journey. Remember to feed your pet 2-3 hours before the journey as some of them tend to experience motion sickness.
When you reach your destination, book a pet-friendly hotel; ensure this is done in advance as bookings can be difficult. If the hotel has a lawn or is near a beach, it will be better for your pet as they get the chance to roam freely.
If you decide to travel by road, stop every two hours to give your pet some water and take them for a walk so that they can answer nature's call; otherwise they will be dehydrated and lethargic. Carry their medications, if any. Also carry a tick spray for emergencies. Never leave your pet unattended even if you halt the car for 2 minutes. Don't leave the window or door open because it makes them anxious and are likely to bolt if they get the chance.
Jet Airways, Air India, Indigo and SpiceJet are the only 4 airlines in India that allow pets on board. SpiceJet does not allow the pet to travel in the cabin unless it is medically certified. Indigo allows dogs whose owners have physical disabilities. Air India allows small pets to travel in the cabin, but the large ones are placed in cargo. If you take your pet by Jet Airways, the crew will inform when your pet has boarded the cargo hold. What's more, the arrangements made for them are next to impressive.
For any trip that you take, these are some ON THE WAY rules:
- Talk to your vet about giving your dog chewable vitamin C tablets. They have been known to relieve stress.
- On flights, the dog should be kept in an enclosed crate with enough space for it to move around freely. Use an absorbent material to line the base of the crate. It should also have a water bowl.
- Don't sedate pets while they are travelling.
- You need a certificate from the vet stating that your dog is fit to travel.
It's time to pack those bags and take your dog on that long relaxing vacation you thought off. Don't forget to click those selfies with your four-legged bestie. Enjoy :)
